Hello, everybody! It's happening! I think I want to move to the suburbs. For example, today all I did was: clean out my humidifier, die over Chrissy Tiegen stealing my McDonald's baby shower idea, walk to Marshall's, buy lots of socks and plates at insane discounts, go to Super Stop and Shop, and celebrate with Danny about the $7 sock 6-packs. (Oh and catch up on Broad City.)

I know there's lots else to do in the suburbs, I just mean to say that I'm starting to wonder why I pay more money to live in a city when all I want to do is drive to Marshall's and Stop and Shop. I'd forgotten how much I love a real supermarket. It's amazing how, in Queens grocery stores you can find Filipino sauces or Armenian cheeses, but the junk food I remember as a suburban kid--forget about it! Generally I find that pretty cool... until I need a cosmic brownie.

Today I was in need of a pasta dinner a la my mama. I came home with some Bertolli Five Cheese Pasta Sauce and onion rolls; that's some real nostalgic shhh. The first time I ever "cooked," it was to help my mom with dinner. She'd open up a jar of pasta sauce, dump it into a sauce pan, and I would be in charge of rolling up ground beef (no seasoning, no breadcrumbs) and tossing it into the simmering sauce. (Get fancy with, like, hundreds of other pasta sauce ideas here!) We'd also toast up some frozen, garlicky bread and I'd basically create a sandwich at the table. That still might be my favorite way to eat spaghetti....

So, after an ep or two of Broad City, I made my meal, inspired both by my mom and the fabulous spaghetti sandwich at M. Wells Dinette. Lookit! Spaghetti sandwiches! Like my momma feeding a family of five on a box of pasta, these sandwiches are the perfect low-budget way to wow your guests quickly and with some serious flavor. I honestly really love the Bertolli Five Cheese sauce for these--unlike a lot of other pasta sauces, the second ingredient isn't sugar or corn syrup. If I were looking for a shortcut to making a homemade marinara, this one would be my choice. Pour it over some spaghetti, shape the pasta into burgers, bake, and you can feed a crowd in no time!

Spaghetti Sandwiches

  • 1/2 lb spaghetti
  • 2 cups Bertolli Five Cheese Pasta Sauce
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup Italian bread crumbs
  • 5 onion rolls
  • 4 Tbsp unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 tsp granulated garlic
  • 5 leaves romaine lettuce
  • 5 Tbsp Caesar salad dressing

Cooking Directions

  1. Place a large pot of water to boil over high heat. Cook pasta for about six minutes, until al dente. Drain pasta and let cool slightly.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line baking sheet(s) with aluminum foil. Add pasta sauce, eggs, and bread crumbs to the pasta. Shape pasta into 5 patties, about 1/2 cup pasta in each patty. Place on baking sheet(s) and bake for about 20 minutes, until patties crisp up a bit on the edges.
  3. Slice rolls in half and toast in oven for a few minutes. Meanwhile, mix butter with granulated garlic. Also, spread dressing on lettuce and then break each leaf into 2 or 3 pieces. Remove buns from oven.
  4. Build sandwiches: spread buns with garlic butter, top with patty, lettuce, and top bun! Serve with additional Bertolli Five Cheese Pasta Sauce, warmed for dipping!
